Vanesa Ribas received a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College in 2002 and her Ph.D. in Sociology from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2012. Her research interests include international migration, race relations, and work. She has conducted ethnographic research on social relations between Latinos and African Americans in the meatpacking industry of the American South. She is currently working on a book manuscript based on her dissertation, titled “On the Line: The Working Lives of Latinos and African Americans in the New South,” which questions conventional theories of intergroup competition and conflict.
