Sociology Graduate Student Grant Program

For projects or travel occurring between

January 1st and June 30th Deadline: December 1st

July 1st and December 31st Deadline: June 1st

Two types of awards:

  • Travel, transportation to scholarly meetings to present academic papers, maximum $400

  • Research, to assist with research-related expenses, maximum $600 per award

Grants may be awarded for:

  • Materials or supplies for research

  • photocopying of research materials

  • transcription of tapes

  • purchase of minor equipment other than computers

  • travel for field, library, or museum study, except for travel to other UC campuses

  • travel to present papers at scholarly meetings

Grants may not be awarded for:

  • no award for computing equipment

  • no award for costs associated with preparation of the final copy of the dissertation or thesis (including typing, copying, microfilming, photography or related costs)

  • no award for subsistence while traveling to present a paper at a meeting

  • no award for transportation to other UC campuses -See below for travel to UC campuses.

Information:

  • There are two grant periods within an academic year; July 1st - December 31st and January 1st - June 30th.

  • Fill out the research grant application or travel grant application. Priority will be given to graduate students who have advanced to candidacy, are working on dissertations, and who have not received funding in the past. Students can receive up to $2,000 lifetime cap during their campus support time limit. To receive a grant, graduate students must be enrolled full-time during the grant period, be within campus support time limits, and in good academic standing. Travel grants are only to be used for travel to the academic conference for which they were awarded. Research grants are to be spent before December 31st or June 30th. Requests for a one-time no-cost extension on research grants should also be requested through Tanya before December 31st or June 30th. Unused funds will automatically be returned to the Sociology grad grant pool. Notification of awards will be issued approximately two weeks after the deadline.
  • For travel to other UC campuses, please fill out the Intercampus Travel application, funded by the Academic Senate Committee on Research. One trip allowed per year per graduate student. Requires approval from the Chair.
