1. Official application for graduate admission and award, obtainable on line http://graduateapp.ucsd.edu/. You will need a permanent email address to create an account for your application.
b. Three Letters of Recommendation (online). You will need to provide email addresses of your recommenders. The following application documents (supporting materials) should be sent directly to the Department of Sociology:
3. Scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Required only of applicants whose native language is not English, or whose undergraduate education was conducted in a language other than English. Please request scores to be sent to the department address above, or UCSD's institution code 4836. Our department code is 2102. 4. Official scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test of verbal, quantitative, and analytical aptitudes are required for admission by the Department of Sociology. Scores are generally submitted 4-6 weeks after the test is administered, so please be mindful of the deadline. Examinations and information regarding this exam can be found at Educational Testing Service, www.ets.org, or at www.gre.org/. Applicants should request that official scores be sent directly to the Department of Sociology at the above university address, or institution code 4836, department code 2102. 5. Transcripts should be sent by the institution directly to the Department of Sociology at the above university address. 6. Three letters of recommendation (if hard copy). If your recommender prefers sending paper or hard copy letters, refer them to this link Paper Letter of Recommendation form to print out the form. For paper letters, you must also complete the Waiver of Letter of Recommendation Access form. Submit the waiver form with each letter of recommendation form you give to a recommender. If recommender does not submit a completed waiver form from you with the paper letter, it is assumed that you have elected not to waive access to the contents. 7. A sample of the applicant's scholarly writing (term paper, article, M.A. thesis, etc.) Your writing sample should be no more than 30 pages. Incomplete files will not be considered. Applicants are responsible for overseeing that all materials (application, GRE scores, TOEFL scores, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and writing sample) are received by the deadline. All students accepted for the graduate program must register for the fall quarter. Applicants wishing to defer for a year must complete, and return to the Office of Graduate Studies, the Admissions Reply Form (email sent at the time of admission) stating their intent. Students requesting to have admission deferred are not guaranteed acceptance or financial assistance for the following year. Their files will be evaluated along with new applications for that year. Graduate
students who have received either a master's degree or its equivalent
from other universities will not receive another M.A. at UCSD.
They may petition to waive courses that appear to repeat work they have
already successfully completed. Petitions requesting course exemption
are to be submitted after the student has begun the program. Additional
seminars will be required in place of a course being granted exemption. Online Application
